So glad Hoard Antiques has opened in the Ravenswood neighborhood, at 4710 N. Damen! Owner Jayson Lambert, whom I met biking last summer, has a great assortment of vintage finds for a range of antique lovers. Stop in and look around! I LOVE the "church choir seats" above, which were saved from an old Chicago church. Jayson suggests using them in a movie room or waiting room--sweet ideas. I also think they'd be a fun addition to a long, lonely entry hallway, where you and guests stop to put on and take off your shoes! Welcome, Hoard! So glad to have you!

I checked out Andersonville Galleria this weekend (5247 N. Clark St., Chicago), right in the heart of the North Side gem-of-a-neighborhood--you guessed it--Andersonville! My fave exhibitor there was Architectural Anarchy. Loved the 1950s era antiques. They reminded me of the best items hiding in my grandpa's garage. Chicago Home + Garden did a great little brief about it on Jan. 21. Check it out!

Book shelf brush up

Looking to reorder your books over the holiday break? I know my IKEA Billy bookcases could use a freshening up!

Here are some great tips for organizing your shelves from syndicated columnist Marni Jameson, http://www.marnijameson.com/ (Love the last tip!)

• Lose the jackets. If you can tear yourself from them, do. Save the covers if you like for future reference or if you ever loan the book.

• Separate hard from soft. Place hardbacks on prominent shelves. My loft has a wall you see when you walk in (hardbacks), and one less visible (paperbacks).

• Line 'em up. Don't smash books along the back wall. That creates a jagged profile. Create a clean line by pulling books evenly to 1 inch from the shelf's front edge.

• Create a system. If looks matter more, or if your collection is small, arrange books by size, tall to short. If finding a book easily matters more, and your collection is large, arrange alphabetically by author.

• Purge. When I learned that Cash4books.net bought used books, I was motivated and cleared 55 from my library. But, when I entered the ISBN numbers, the company would buy only four. For those a check for $8.72 is on the way! I donated the other 51 to the thrift store.

• Follow the thirds rule. When arranging bookshelves, shoot for one-third books, one-third art or photos, and one-third open space.

Watch out, folks!! Our friend Domino is back. Changed, but that's OK, we'll take it!

There's a new online version called Lonny Magazine, which gives us the gorgeous layouts and fun trends we came to love from Domino, but without the posterity of a glossy mag.

I won't lie. I'll miss being able to rip out and savor my favorite ideas. But I'm not complaining! The void left by Domino could only be filled by the editors of the mag themselves. Thanks to a coworker at my new job at Henson Consulting, I'm up to speed on this!

Fall's final hurrah

As soon as the trees in my neighborhood started taking on the brilliant shades of fall, I intended to gather some of them up for an indoor arrangement or two. Noticing this weekend that these trees are getting pretty bare, I decided I'd better get after it! Here's what I collected:

The red bud vases are filled with the gold ginko leaves.

The cylinder is wrapped in red maple leaves, which I placed on tape before binding with ribbon.

Today I visited the modern wing of The Art Institute of Chicago and enjoyed the painting above by Piet Mondrain.

It reminded me of a few rugs I've seen this season, which seem to have been inspired by the work of the Dutch painter.

A beautiful mosaic provider has a flagship store in Chicago that I'm dying to visit at 226 W. Kinzie.

Bisazza was brought to my attention by a St. Louis friend who thought I'd love it. She couldn't have been more right!

The colors are cool, subdued and luxurious. The florals, graphic. The graphic, three dimensional.

Tile work this gorgeous deserves more prominence than a bathroom shower or kitchen backsplash--great inspiration to think outside the box(es) in our own home designs pursuits! Bisazza also has a blog, which details the roots of its designs (runway trends are a big influence). Check it out!

A Chicago friend, who's settling into a new Ukrainian Village apartment, is looking for a way to add spark to her bedroom.

With a fresh coat of paint on her dresser, in a complementary color, these knobs would create a "new" piece in her new pad. All are from Anthropology and can be found here.

A gold washed dresser would give these little owls to great place to nest:

I recently had the pleasure of going to Quincy, Illinois, for a dear friend's wedding. While there, I went on a tour of historic Quincy homes, including this beauty above.

My favorite feature of this home was its gorgeous porch, which was chock full of outdoor design ideas. Summer is drawing to a close, but fall can be the best time of year to linger outside with coffee, a newspaper, and a heavy knit sweater.

Stylish sleepers

We in our late 20's, who purchase property in the hopes of one day expanding our brood, tend to invest in a home that has an extra bedroom or two.

However, until said child is born, this extra space--often labeled "an office"--can become a purposeless dumping ground for unwanted furniture and a lonely desktop computer.

One way to give direction to such a room is to create different zones within it, so that it's more of a guest room with a small desk in it. That way, when company comes a knockin', you have a respectable place to put them!

I've been watching an inexcusable amount of Food Network lately, and while Ina's food makes me the most hungry, it's Tyler Florence's kitchen that I want.

The look is functional and comfortable, but somehow also rustic and sleek. When I one day get to design my own kitchen, it will include his signature subway tile backsplash and copper pots.

I love the little tiles being sold at Hanger 18 at 4726 N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Square. Birds, butterfies and flowers, perfect for a quirky kitchen or child's room.

Hanger 18 has tons of other fun stuff, particularly for the kitchen. Plates, aprons and other accessories feature bold patterns that reference retro, but pop in the present.

I happy houred with some girlfriends last week at this new Chicago spot: Roof at The Wit Hotel.

While the photo above is clearly a rendering, it's not far from the real thing. The views are spectacular, and the decor was fab.

Dark and light grey dominate the surfaces, but splashes of black patent and futurisitic white, anchored by natural wood bones, offered class and sass.

The icing on the cake was the phenomenal service, from the quirky elevator guy to our fabulous waitress Nicole. And the food? Two words: Lamb burgers. A must.

The Wit Hotel, a boutique Doubletree Hotel, is at State and Lake in Downtown Chicago.

Hearing of their 75-cent macarons, my friend Madelyn set out to visit Fritz Pastry this week and invited me along for the ride.

While Madelyn was evaluating their potential as wedding favors, I was eying the soft, feminine and just-too-cute colors for design inspiration. I've long loved these shades for nurseries. One of Beaumotro's most adorable readers (Jill C) has asked for a little advice on a bedroom desk that could double as a vanity, in her new apartment.

I love this assignment. I think a desk-vanity goes a long way toward creating--as Virginia Woolf might agree--"A Room of One's Own." Your own cozy all-in-one nook, that's both personal and functional.

Parsons tables make great desk-vanities (see intro photo). Their shape is classic and they can always moonlight, down the road, as a sofa table, or an entry way piece. West Elm has beautiful ones, here, in several colors and sizes.

Berkus at The Hideout

So you may not be able to tell... But that, on the left, is Nate Berkus. Even at a distance, his hair looks great.

I recently stood in the back of The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, for The Interview Show, to watch on as Berkus charmed the crowd with tales of his travels, design philosphophy, inspirations, and hottie shoe designer boyfriend, Brian Atwood.

The host of The Interview Show, Mark Bazer, did excellent research for the one-on-one, referencing obscure Berkus decorating finds in Greece and getting the designer to dish about his relationship with the Oprah Winfrey Show.

I have a love-hate-love relationship with my small-town roots. Sometimes, it's difficult to put a finger on the feeling that I sometimes get when I think about moments from the not-too-distant past.

I'll be the first to admit that I often find it difficult to find beauty in it, without first finding humor or anger, instead.

My cousin, Britten, however, does this beautifully. Her portraits of Central Illinois--scenes both pastoral and personal--are on-point and honest, yet completely beautiful to me.

Any of you watching the shenanigans of Gov. Rod Blagojevich last week probably heard him proclaim, on every national TV show that would have him, that the "fix was in." Your heart was breaking in sympathy, I'm sure.

The fix that's in, here in Chicago, is winter. And it's going nowhere fast. As a result, I'm in the need for a little bit of green. To simply spot a leaf, in its natural habitat, would be such a treat. To glimpse the blossom of a flower. A blade of grass, for goodness sake.

Perhaps that's why these items struck such a chord with me. With Groundhog's Day behind us, spring is a little closer, right??

It is with very heavy hearts that we say farewell. Over the last 4 years, in 28 issues, we have done our best to create a great magazine. Brighten the gray

I love adding color and pattern to a room, to freshen it up, and pillows are a great way to do it.

But as often as I change my mind, and want to try new things, my pillows can't keep up.

I stumbled upon a low-cost solution.

At a local craft store, I had my pick of patterns. No scouring stores for a pillow cover that might possibly work. And no disappointment finding that the pillow cover I liked wasn't offered in the size I needed.

For the back room in my condo, I wanted a bit of orange, plus a black and white pillow for contrast. I found fabrics that were just right, at a great price. Nothing fancy, but perfect for my purposes.

I sent the fabric, and my blah-beige pillows, home with my mom, and her hometown seamstress sewed them into simple squares.

I love the way they turned out, but I don't feel locked in. At the low cost, I could refresh next year, if I feel the need! (And I'm sure I will!)

Letter People

Do you remember the Letter People?

My kindergarten teacher at Bethany Grade School used these fun characters to teach us our ABCs.

Mrs. Schuman would hide a letter, the day we were learning a new vowel or consonant, and we got to discover it and sing fun songs to learn about its role in the alphabet.

In this same spirit, I recently added an "S" to our home, in classic Radio Flyer red color.

The cardboard cut-out was just a couple of bucks at a local craft store. I love the punch with the play off of my bedroom's green background.

It's only Tuesday, but already I have something on my weekend to-do list.

Not holiday shopping (although, that is an imperative): It's to visit Patina Antiques, 4907 N. Damen Ave.

I was walking to the Metra today when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw an awning I'd never seen before. Note: I take this same path every day and have no idea how I have missed it so many times.

Patina, as described on its website, is "a new cozy antique and home store in the Ravenswood neighborhood, which specializes in a look of simple, urban cottage."

Adler Adoration

I think I've figured out why, while I've religiously watched the past few seasons of Top Chef and Project Runway, I haven't tuned into Top Design.

I usually get my dose of Bravo, via Tivo, about an hour before bed. If I watched Top Design--which is now on break--in this time slot, I'm pretty sure I'd never fall asleep.

Recently, I visited Jonathan Adler's shop on 676 N. Wabash Ave., and I've been daydreaming of this Top Design star's showroom ever since, losing hours of productivity at home and in the workplace.

The Windy City stole the show at The Merchandise Mart's annual holiday shopping extravaganza, "One of a Kind," Dec. 4 to 7.

Everytime I entered a booth, drawn in by unique perspective or beautiful design, low and behold, the sign above read: Chicago, IL.

My mother, sister and I wandered the booths and found some great gifts for friends and family, several of which came from these three local artists:

My mother-in-law, Jeanne, who this weekend celebrated 30 years of marriage to my father-in-law, Bob, (congratulations!) is looking to give a much-used room its own special style.

The door of the Schulte house is always open to guests, and the dining room is the epicenter of activity: a space always overflowing with food, conversation and love.

The Schulte's small formal dining room gets great light and opens to a lovely green family room on one side, and a pimento red kitchen on the other.

Jeanne would like a dining room that unifies the two rooms, and I think wallpaper, or a chair rail, or both, could be the perfect tools for creating a formal focal point.

A beautiful showroom has opened in Lincoln Park, and you must check it out: BoConcept at 1901. N. Clybourn Ave.

A friend and I checked it out for ourselves today and were wowed by the clean lines and pretty proportions.

The furniture was beautiful: The sectionals sleek and sophisticated. The ottomans perfectly plump. The nesting tables classic and cocktail ready.

But our eyes were drawn to a great array of trays.

The trays pictured last were my favorite--two silver squares lined with cowhide. Just too luxurious. Thanks, BoConcept, for letting me snap so many pics!

Holiday pick-ups

The holidays are right around the corner.

Just take a step outside, and you feel it immediately. It's not the holiday spirit, yet. But the 30 degree temps prove it's on its way.

The delay of the living-room-facelift-election results had nothing to do with a convicted felon from Alaska.

However, just as news of Ted Stevens crossed the lips of pundits across the country, I finally submitted my order to West Elm for the items composing...

Dozens of ballots were cast, and it was a landslide. Democracy is alive and well! Soon, grey and white paisely curtains will drape from my windows, complemented by a swirling-sequined pillow and a neutral grey cushion.

Nailing it

In traditional Chicago fashion, the hallway in my condo is like a portal to another world. Since my husband and I moved in one year ago, all 16 feet of it has been begging for some attention.

I have collected magazine tear-outs of home photo/art galleries for several years, but only a few weeks ago did I finally bite the bullet and bust out the hammer and nails.

As I contemplated doing irreparable harm to my nick-less drywall, there were so many questions. Should I stick exclusively to black-and-white photos? Do the frames need to match? Should all the photos be matted? How important is symmetry? Can art be mixed in?

Consulting my fave designs (torn, per usual, from the pages of Domino magazine), here were the steps that I took:

1. The round-up: First, I gathered up the candidates. I was suprised to find myself short on both photos and frames. After a trip to Walgreens (to print pics from a recent trip to California), a trip to Jo-Ann Fabrics (for a half-dozen frames--excellent prices, Jo-Anns!), and a scavenger hunt of frames collecting dust under my bed and in my bookcase, I had a grouping of 14.

2. The size-up: My 14 pieces varied in size and content--wedding photos, family photos, landscapes, art work, in every dimension, from 4-by-6 to 8-by-10--and my frames were black, brown and cherry. Looking back at my favorite collages, I was reassured that this eclecticism was indeed a good thing, and that the darkness of the frames could actually serve to unify the collection.

3. The layout: Not trusting myself to wing it, I plotted a course. I cleared away a rectangular area in my living room and tested out a few scenarios. I found that my taste veered toward a casual design with flexibility for add-ons. Yet, I did seek a bit of shape, settling on one that's greatest mass was in the center. I also liked the look of big frames pieced in with smaller ones, for variety.

4. The trick: I took a digital photo of the layout, which I referred to frequently as one-by-one, I moved each frame to the wall.

5. The first strike: I decided it best to start in the center. That way, I could make adjustments as I sprawled outward. This proved my best decision, for while the order remained largely the same, as I got to nailing, I changed my mind on spacing and decided to put an extra inch of bare space between each frame.

6: The mistakes: I made a few boo-boos. But my spackle was within reach, as was the original paint, for minor touch ups.

7: The finish: Ta-da! While it was difficult to get a good snap-shot of the finished product, to share with all of you, I am really pleased with the results. The photos put my favorite people right where they should be--in a gallery all their own.

Aged to perfection

The Merchandise Mart, from Oct. 3 to 6, in its vast interior featured the finds of more than 100 antique collectors from across the world.

The spread was overwhelming, yet clarifying.

Just when I thought there was nothing I didn't like, I realized that such resolution is best reserved for appreciation, and not doled generously on affection.

For, while I saw much that impressed me at The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair, few showrooms made me want to reach for ye ole checkbook.

One was local biz Finnegan Gallery. The end of the gardening season, at least for 2008, is upon us. But Finnegan Gallery makes you yearn for a bigger plot of green in which to nest time-worn fascinations.

And not all of the treasures are for the great outdoors alone. Finnegan Gallery's light fixtures, in particular--be they coach lights or railway station lamps--deliver stories, and history, in a way that Pottery Barn creations (disclaimer: which I also love) simply cannot.

Items currently found on Finnegan Gallery's website aren't those that I recall from the Fair, but they hold the same diamond-in-the-rough quality that drew me, and my friend, into their display, and off of the comfortable carpeted lane encircling the show. A friend and I lunched today at Rom, near Wacker and Franklin. For a corner cafe in a straight-laced business district, this cafe has a pretty fashion-forward style.

I'm making a change in my bathroom, and I haven't decided how much red coral is too much red coral.

Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Groupings of two or three collectables or commonly themed items can look too matchy, but sometimes more is more. Thus, the conundrum.

My husband and I were shopping a few weekends ago when we passed a blueberry couch I've had my eye on for about a year. "I've always loved that," I muttered, to myself, in self-imposed defeat.

"It's very Beaumotro," he said, impressing me tremendously.

Oh, the couch... The jewel-toned color of a sucker, and just as sweet. Simply looking at it gave me a sugar high. Suddenly, our modern gray-blue leather sectional at home became Carrie Bradshaw's vintage ivory skirt suit: perfectly charming, until slipping on Vivian Westwood bridal couture.

When going down the modern road, it can be tough to veer off the paved urbane path and into greener pastures. Smooth leather seating, marble counter tops and angular fixtures are so perfectly paired, so harmonious, that it seems wrong to mix it up with something unexpected. But that is, of course, what keeps a modern space from becoming space age or stuck in the past.

Fun and Eames

I'm a late interior design bloomer, so I only one year ago discovered Charles and Ray Eames and their famous West Coast architectural furniture. I remember the moment. On a glossy magazine page, within a room of trendy furniture, the Eames chair shown like diamond among common rocks. It's angles were perfection. Light glowed within it's wood grain. I sought out the caption and found the Eames name, and the price tag. Quality doesn't come cheap.

Eames had me at hello, but its beauty was just the beginning. It was art, but it looked comfortable and timeless. I could just as easily imagine reading a book in it, as passing it on to my children and my children's children.

Who doesn't love the Mad Men aesthetic? This gorgeous AMC original series brilliantly borrows from a time in America's not-too-distant past when poise abutted revolution. Like its story line, Mad Men's design teeters between coifed and tucked, and snug and provacative. And it's all ripe for borrowing.

Today, Beaumotro gets its wings. After much thought about starting an interior design drop box, I've decided to get going, at last.

To give you a taste of what you'll find on this page, I should share a bit about what inspires me. I love things that are beautiful (beau) modern (mo) and retro (tro). It's easy to find beauty in things modern and retro, separately. But when modern and retro coexist? This is my favorite combination.

A modern take on a birdhouse, sofa or collander always has roots in a more primitive design. Where would mod-squads of today go for inspiration, if not back? Even Christian's fierce designs harken another Christian: Dior. Evolution in style is two steps forward, with one eye artfully fixed on the rearview mirror.

The days, weeks and months to come will bring my favorite bits for the home to you and your PC. Or Mac. I'll stay out of that debate.
